In the Mechanics of Rock Blasting Course Dr. Calvin J. Konya discusses the true mechanics of rock breakage in a practical sense. In the beginning Dr. Konya proves that the ‘shock breakage theory’ is incorrect and why it is harmful during the blast design process. Following the disproof of the Shock Breakage Theory, Dr. Konya introduces his Gas Pressure Breakage Theory and teaches about proper blast design using this method. Dr. Konya also discusses explosive safety, fragmentation, and vibration from blasting.
Using the principles discussed here, Dr. Konya has worked for over 50 years in the Rock Blasting Industry. He is the Founder, First President, and First Executive Director of the International Society of Explosive Engineers and is the current President of Precision Blasting Services. Dr. Konya has managed blasting operations and designed blasts on every continent and has worked in over 1000 different mines and quarries. In addition to this, Dr. Konya has worked on hundreds of large-scale construction projects including: Folsom Dam, Kentucky Locks, and the Panama Canal. He has served as an expert witness for blasting in over 100 legal cases and has also designed his own emulsion manufacturing systems and formulations. Dr. Konya also has an extensive record for training and teaching as he taught at the University of Missouri – Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology), West Virginia University, and was the department chair of The Ohio State University. In addition to this he has put on hundreds of seminars and taught thousands of students, many of which have gone on to have extremely successful careers in the Rock Blasting Industry. Dr. Konya is truly a legend in the Explosive Industry and has exposed such problems as cap scatter, seismograph errors, and the understanding of the true rock breakage mechanisms.
